Once upon a time there were three demons, Tarakakusha, Vidyumali and Viryavan they were in deep penance. They were sons of asura Taraksura, who was killed by devas. While on her dead bed, he instructed his sons “You three should take revenge and defeat devas.” A thousand years passed, three sat in a penance pasture with their body upside down, were still in. Lord Bramha satisfied with their tough penance, came down to them and asked “Children, I am pleased with your penance ask for a boon.” They three opened their eyes. Tarakakusha said “make us immortal”. Bramha said “Ask something else.” They discussed for some time and said “Ok then we want three forts flying in air. The fortress should be as big as a city. They shall be made up of gold, silver and iron. They would have elegant places.” “What about your death?” Bramha asked. “After every thousand years these cities would make a straight line merely for a second and if someone destroys it in that time we will die. The arrow that destroys the cities should be Bramha astra. “Tathstu, you shall be granted all these boons.” Speaking this Bramha disappeared. Evil thoughts rushed into their mind. The asuras began to misuse the power began to destroy cities and villages. All devas came to Lord Shiva and they said “Help us Lord Shiva.” Lord Shiva agreed to destroy the cities. He made the Vast Meru parvat his bow and Vasuki naag the string and took his Bramha astra. They all were very happy. The illuminated the land with diyas and looked like all stars had come on earth. This day is also called Deva Diwali.”
