Sports and Games: Basic introduction

An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively is known as sport or game.

According to the World Sports Encyclopedia (2003) there are 8,000 indigenous sports and sporting games.


Basically the sports or games or categorised in two main groups Indoor and Outdoor. 


Indoor games are those that can be played within an enclosed place or a building for example volleyball, golfing, table tennis, tennis, bowling, card games and boardgames while out door games are played outside for example, soccer, cycling, skiing and skating.

Air Sports: - 
a) The term air sports covers a range of aerial activities

b) Some names of air sports:- Aerobatics, Air racing, Ballooning, Cluster ballooning, Hopper ballooning, Wingsuit flying, Gliding, Hang gliding, Powered hang glider, Human powered aircraft, Model aircraft, Parachuting, Banzai skydiving, BASE jumping, Skydiving, Skysurfing, Wingsuit flying, Paragliding, Powered paragliding, Paramotoring, Ultralight aviation etc.

c) The sports inserted above are governed internationally by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

d) World Air Games (WAG) is an international air sports event organized by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (International Aeronautical Federation - FAI), inspired by the Olympic Games and held every four years since 1997.

Archery

a) Archery is the sport, practice or skill of using a bow to propel arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modern times, it is mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity. A person who participates in archery is typically called an archer or a bowman, and a person who is fond of or an expert at archery is sometimes called a toxophilite.

a) A net is tide at the centre of the play fied in such type of sports. 

b) These may be individual or team games. They can be played indoor or outdoor depending on the rules of the game.

d) These games are also involved in olympics.

Basketball family
a) As name suggest a basket and a ball is involved in this type of sport.

b) These games are played in team.

c) Some of famous games of such type are Basketball, Beach basketball, Deaf basketball, Streetball, Water basketball, Wheelchair basketball, Cestoball, Korfball, Netball, Fastnet, Indoor netball, Ringball, Slamball etc.

d) Some of these are also part of Olympics.

Bat-and-ball (safe haven)

a) Bat-and-ball games (or safe haven games) are field games played by two opposing teams. The teams alternate between "batting" roles, sometimes called "in at bat" and "out in the field", or simply in and out. Only the batting team may score, but they have equal chances in both roles. The game is counted rather than timed.

b) Some of famous sports of these type are. a) Sports that are played with some sort of board as the primary equipment.

a) A combat sport is a competitive contact sport where two combatants fight against each other using certain rules of engagement.

l) Goalball, Tchoukball, Team handball, Beach handball, Czech handball, Field handball, Torball, Water polo etc. Ball family games are well known in the world of sports.

m) Hunting is sometimes considered as blood sports. Beagling, Big game hunting, Deer hunting, Fox hunting, Hare coursing, Wolf hunting etc.

n) Ice sports are Bandy, Rink bandy, Broomball, Curling, Ice hockey, Ringette, Ice yachting, Figure skating, etc.

p) Mixed discipline consists of more than two components and more than one components Decathlon, heptathlon, and the pentathlons consist of ten, seven, and five component contests that are scored together using one points system. s) Racquet (or racket) sports are Sports where a player uses a racquet (or racket) to hit a ball or other objects. Racket sports are games in which players use rackets to hit a ball or other object.
