Cyclamen Cyprus
With delicate colorful petals and heart-shaped leaves sporting silvery starry patterns, the cyclamen is a visually appealing flower. It is also known as Persian violet or poor man’s orchid. It was once a popular choice for Christmas floral decorations in Victorian England. The flower is native to Europe, especially the Mediterranean region. It goes best in cool climes and indirect sunlight. There are little over twenty species of cyclamen genus. The perennial plant barely about a foot high, so it is a great indoor plant. It grows primarily from tuber, but it can also grow by seeds. The cyclamen blooms at different times of the year depending on the verity. Its shape is unique. The flower grows on a stalk that rises about the foliage. The stalk is bent at the tip so that the nose of the flower faces downwards. Each flower has five waxy petals that seem to be swept upwards resembling a butterfly in the flight. The blossoms appear in various shades of pink, red and white.
The seeds of the cyclamen are dispersed mainly by ants. Some species of cyclamen are endangered. The tuber of the plant is poisonous to dogs and cats.
