Living and Non Living Things - List of activities to do with class

Science is one of the main subjects in today's era. Here is an article for you all describing various activities to spread knowledge about living and nonliving things among the kids. I am sure that it will be helpful to you any will definitely make the things easy. So please read this till the end.


Start a list

A list about the living and non living things can be made in two different columns by asking the names of each category to every child in the class. All you have to ask and write them on a board in two respective columns headed as Living Things and Non-living Things.

This will encourage all the kids to tell the names of different things and identify them in terms of two specifications. And turn their interest positively in the subject. And they will become attentive through the entire class. More the attentiveness faster will be grasping and better will be results.

Differentiation between living and non-living things
This is completely conversation activity which will come out with mind-blowing ideas of young fellows. All you have to discuss about all the members listed in above activity - especially deal with Living Things. This will include a basic question which characterize the things as living or non-living. Here is the simple question which you have to ask the kids, "What is main feature which categorize the given thing as living or non-living?"

Before starting this conversation you have to explain the main difference between living and non-living things. You have to explain about the characteristics which make things alive. Then you the session will begin. If the kids are not able to write down the facts then you have to use appropriate pictures and symbols to explain the subject. Then start asking every item listed which features it as living or non-living and write down all the ideas. Make sure all the present one are involved in the conversation. This will make the list of new mind blowing concepts. Let all the kids come out with their own ideas. More the involvement of kids finer will be their knowledge. Do not force the kids to correct their answers - if they are wrong then explain the fact with a lot of kindness.

Questions of discussion at the end
Here is list of few questions which are concluding one and students must discuss on these questions. The group discussion will make them attentive and sharpen their knowledge. This activity will finely boost their confidence and social behavior.

  • Does the object reproduce?
  • Does the object grow?
  • What are some characteristics of living things?
  • What are some characteristics of nonliving things?
  • What makes living things different from nonliving things?
  • What is difference between living and dead things?
  • What characteristics did all of the living things have in common?
  • Did any nonliving things possess some of the same characteristics as living things? Which ones?
  • How were the living things different from the nonliving things?
  • What kinds of nonliving things move?
  • What is the difference between the movements of living and non-living objects?
  • Do all living things move?
  • What kinds of living things move? What kinds don't move?
  • Do plants move?
  • Why do living things move?
  • Do all living things eat? Who eats and who doesn’t?
